Introduction:
Bachelor of Science Degree. Botany department is one of the major departments in our
college. The department is committed to the development of academic excellence in teaching.
The department is highly motivated and excited to share both their knowledge and passion in the
field of Botany. Botany is a subject moreover a tradition followed by almost all human beings
knowingly or unknowingly. As a department closely related to nature, we give more importance
to nature, its greenery as well as environmental health. The study of Botany, dealing with plant
structure, function, classification and evolution, has inspired many great young minds. Plants are
unique as solar energy converts and provide of energy for all heterotrophic organisms. It is
fascinating to study the broad spectrum of reproductive processes in algae, fungi, lichen, plant
pathology, bryophytes, gymnosperms and flowering plants. As an integral part of the
undergraduate education, the department carries out extensive field work to ensure that our
undergraduate program with the current requirements in Botany practical field. The Department
is providing Departmental library facility with a number of reference books to support the needy
students. The aim of the Department is to strengthen its core activities of teaching, training and
research. The department would also like to expand in future, the development of technology and
industrial interaction under its auspices. The main thrust of the Department however is in the
areas like Taxonomy of Angiosperm, Morphology, Anatomy, Wood analysis, Phytogeography,
Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Ethnobotany, Ecology, Phycology, Mycology, Bryology,
Pteridology, physiology, cell Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant
Breeding, Horticulture and conservation of Biodiversity. A new introduction of skilled-based
courses like Biofertilizers, mushroom cultivation, soil science, floriculture, horticulture, Mineral
nutrition with hydroponics, Pharmacognosy etc.

them to face challenges in life.
Mission:
 Department of Botany orient the students to face life’s challenges and various related
concepts that influence them to think in every realm to overcome life obstacles and become
economically more vital, self-reliant and develop scientific temperament.
 Students and faculty interact through various programs and share a good rapport.
 The mission includes a commitment to vision by organizing popular talk sand up grading
programs to a broad spectrum of students.
 An explanation is also given in Kannada wherever required.
 Mission also includes conducting tests, seminars, projects to enable the students to
develop overall abilities to face new life challenges after graduation.

Objectives of Department:
The course introduces students to the importance of plants as an integral part of existence on the
planet. It is imperative to internalize fully the fact that human existence depends on plants and
hence, the necessity to conserve nature is the need forwelfare of the society. A few activities are
conducted at the end of each semester which is relevant to the topics covered. Algal and lichen
collection, mushroom cultivation, visits to tissue culture lab, plant collection trips, excursions,
project works, group discussions, seminars, assignments, and maintenance of plant diversity on
college campuses are a few of the activities. These activities enable the students to study the
subject outside the classroom environment. Since the initiation of the department, various educational
trips have been organized for familiarizing the students with different plant species in their natural
environment and research institutions.

Pedagogy
The College is affiliated to Rani Channamma University, Belagavi and Bagalkot
University Jamakhandi and the Botany Department follows the university syllabus.
