Department Profile

Introduction
Chemistry places a strong emphasis on an understanding of the structures
and properties of atoms and molecules, and on using this understanding to predict
and interpret the behavior of matter. Many of the concepts of physics and the
methods of mathematics are fundamental to chemistry. Chemistry is in turn of
primary importance to many other subjects including astrophysics, geology,
biological sciences, environmental science, materials science, pharmaceutical
science and the medical sciences. These and other aspects of the subject are
reflected in the courses and programs offered by the department.
The department of Chemistry ensures an effective teaching-learning process,
using ICT facilities and interactive sessions in the classroom between the students
and teachers. The students are also subjected to an environment that correlates the
theoretical and practical aspect of the syllabus. The students are allowed to keep
their mind open and be innovative in their approach towards the subject. Teachers
also attend various seminars, symposiums and refresher courses to enable them to
encourage students and inspire them for future studies and research.

Vision
“Our vision to impact exemplary education and promote pioneering research
in cutting-edge areas of interdisciplinary fields, with a focus on enriching core
areas of chemistry through best in class learning practices”

Mission
 To educate students for understanding chemical principles involved in
engineering systems by offering innovative research exposure.
 Make students aware about the global changes in the environment and its
impact on the society.
 To develop leadership skills, preserving values, ethos and engage in the
process of lifelong learning.
Objectives of Department
1. The student will understand the importance of the Periodic Table of the
Elements, how it came to be, its role in organizing chemical information and
its relationship to the natural world and natural resources.
2. The student will understand the interdisciplinary nature of chemistry and will
develop an ability to integrate knowledge of mathematics, physics, and other
disciplines to a wide variety of chemical and environmental problems.
3. The student will learn the laboratory skills needed to design, safely conduct
and interpret chemical experiments, and will learn proper ways of disposing
of chemical waste.

4. The student will acquire a foundation in chemistry of sufficient breadth and
depth to enable them to understand and critically interpret the primary
chemical literature.
5. The student will develop the ability to effectively communicate scientific
information and research results in written and oral formats with a diverse
range of audiences.
6. The student will develop an ability to recognize ethical and professional
responsibilities in scientific situations and make informed judgments, which
must consider the impact of chemical processes in global, economic,
environmental, and societal contexts.

Pedagogy
The College is affiliated to Bagalkot University jamakhandi and the Chemistry
Department follows the university syllabus.
 Connect to Prior Knowledge: Bridge new concepts with what students already
know.
 Develop Conceptual Understanding: Focus on why things happen, not just what.
 Promote Inquiry & Critical Thinking:
Encourage questions, debate, and experimentation
.
 Link to Real-World Relevance: Apply chemistry to sustainability, daily life, and
other sciences (e.g., biology, physics).
 Utilize Technology: Integrate digital tools and information technology for better
engagement.

Field study and Industrial Visit
Field studies are an excellent way to underscore lessons and help students to
understand that what they learn in the classroom can be applied to real life. When
developing field studies for chemistry students, a teacher needs to focus on
demonstrations of professional chemistry that are dramatic, entertaining and
hopefully point out the career options available to somebody trained as a chemist.
Industrial Chemistry is the branch of chemistry which applies
physical and chemical processes towards the transformation of raw materials into
products that are of benefit to humanity. The goal of the Bachelor of Science in
Industrial Chemistry degree programme is to produce graduates who will be highly
skilled in this activity. We do this by first giving the students a strong foundation
in chemistry, mathematics and physics. The Industrial Chemistry graduate is a
chemist with knowledge linkages in engineering, chemical processing, economics
and industrial management.
At the end of the course, the graduates will :

1. Have skills to enable them understand, develop and modify industrial
technologies and hence promote industrial development.
2. Be able to operate and manage industrial equipment, processes and plants.
3. Have the potential to pursue careers in academia, research and consultancy.
4. Have a broad understanding of chemistry.
